Fans of I Know What You Did Last Summer have been eagerly awaiting news about the sequel, and Jennifer Love Hewitt has given them something to look forward to. In a recent interview with Variety, she teased that the long-anticipated return is very close. “We’re so close, guys! I promise I’ll make a fun announcement, and it’ll be amazing,” she said, expressing her excitement about reprising her role as Julie, a character she originally played at 21.
Hewitt also shared how honored she is to be invited back at 45. “It’s really cool to be thought of in that way, to not just be replaced by a younger version,” she said. “We’re trying really hard to make it work.” She also made it clear that she doesn’t want to just be a brief cameo from ’90s nostalgia. Hewitt wants her character to return with purpose, showing fans how Julie has evolved over the past 27 years.
The film, which originally hit theaters in 1997, was based on Lois Duncan’s novel about a group of teens terrorized by a hook-wielding murderer after a deadly car accident. The upcoming sequel, which is set to release in summer 2025, will feature both Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr., who played her boyfriend, Ray.
Hewitt joked about how different she will look, noting that the most “terrifying” part of the movie might be seeing her as a 45-year-old, especially since fans last saw her as a 21-year-old. But she’s excited to return to the role and hopes everything falls into place.
Freddie Prinze Jr. is also on board, and Brandy Norwood, who played Julie’s roommate Karla in the sequel, has expressed interest in joining as well. Brandy jokingly asked Hewitt and Prinze to “hit me up,” since her character survived the second film.
With everything coming together, fans of the original film are hoping for a thrilling return to the slasher classic they know and love.
