Amanda Seyfried has one big wish — she wants to sing the title song in a potential Mamma Mia 3.
The actress recently shared on SiriusXM’s The Spotlight with Jessica Shaw that she’s never had the chance to sing “Mamma Mia” in the franchise. “It was Meryl’s song in the first movie, and it was Lily’s song in the sequel. I think Sophie deserves her shot because it’s my favorite song. It’s my daughter’s favorite song, too,” Seyfried explained.
In the original Mamma Mia! movie, Meryl Streep’s character, Donna, sings the song when all three of her former suitors — and Sophie’s potential dads — show up unexpectedly. In the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, it’s performed by Lily James, Jessica Keenan Wynn, and Alexa Davies, playing the younger versions of Donna, Tanya, and Rosie. But Seyfried hopes the iconic song can finally be sung by her character, Sophie. “It’s got this incredible energy behind it,” she added. “It’s a total bop.”
When asked which track she’d want to duet with Sabrina Carpenter, Seyfried mentioned that she’d love Carpenter to play her daughter in a potential third movie. “Technically, she could,” she laughed, when asked if Carpenter was the right age. “I don’t mind. I’ll wear old age makeup. If Sabrina wants to play my daughter, I’ll make it happen. I’m a big fan.”
Though a third Mamma Mia! film hasn’t been confirmed, there’s been a lot of buzz about it over the years. Christine Baranski, who played Tanya in both previous films, hinted that the idea is already in the works. Earlier this year, she shared that producer Judy Craymer had filled her in on a potential plot. “It’s not just wishful thinking,” Baranski teased. “Judy Craymer makes things happen.”
It’s possible that everyone could come back for round three — including Meryl Streep, who said she’d happily return, even if it’s as a reincarnated version of Donna, who was revealed to have passed away in the second film. Fans could also expect the return of other familiar faces like Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Dominic Cooper, Andy Garcia, and Cher.
The first Mamma Mia! followed Sophie as she tried to figure out which of Donna’s former flames was her father before her wedding day. The sequel explored the early years of Donna’s life and the reopening of her hotel. Both films, based on the hit Broadway musical, featured the beloved music of ABBA, turning every song into a cherished moment.
So, maybe someday Sophie will get to sing her favorite tune, and Donna and the Dynamos could have Sabrina Carpenter join in on the fun.
