Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie are teaming up for a new adaptation of Emily Brontë’s classic gothic novel, Wuthering Heights. Robbie will play Catherine Earnshaw, a spirited young woman caught between her love for Elordi’s Heathcliff and the social status that comes with marrying Edgar Linton. Elordi, known for his role in Saltburn, will portray Heathcliff, one of literature’s most notorious romantic figures.
In addition to acting, Robbie will produce the film through her company, LuckyChap, marking their third collaboration with writer-director Emerald Fennell, who previously worked on Promising Young Woman and Saltburn. Fennell is also producing alongside MRC and is currently in pre-production, with plans for a shoot in 2025. Details about whether the film will stay true to the 19th-century setting or take a modern twist are still pending.
Wuthering Heights, written by Brontë, explores the tumultuous love story between Cathy and Heathcliff, set against the harsh backdrop of the West Yorkshire moors. Cathy loves Heathcliff but seeks the security of a marriage to Edgar Linton, ultimately driving Heathcliff to madness and haunting him after her death.
Fennell’s previous work shows a clear influence from the gothic genre, echoing themes from Brontë’s writing. The story has been adapted for the screen several times, with notable versions including a 1939 film starring Laurence Olivier and several television adaptations. Now, Robbie, Elordi, and Fennell are set to bring their own vision to this timeless tale.
